Newcomer to the category Steven King finished building his #30 RX8 Cup car earlier this year in time for the first round at Phillip Island. After many problem free test days getting their heads around the new build and assistance from Maisie Place and Ric Shaw the car was ready to go for Kings debut at the Island.
Steven hit the track for the first practice session at Phillip Island and after a few laps driving the car at full speed the team realised the synchros were worn out, forcing them to look after the gearbox for the remainder of the weekend. After a great race one unfortunately the engine let go in race two seeing their race meeting come to an end.
It wasn’t the start to the season the central NSW team was after but their focus quickly turned to preparing the car for round 2. King explained “Originally, we planned to build another engine, but with limited time and being new to rotaries, Ric came to the rescue by supplying us with a replacement. Once we put it in, we took the car to Winton for a track day to run in the engine and get a feel for the track.”
With only two months between rounds Wayward Racing have successfully rebuilt the gearbox, diff and installed a new engine all from their home workshop. What was a massive effort in a small amount of time it will see King lineup for round 2 this weekend at Winton Raceway.
