Michael Hazelton has had an incredible 2024 RX8 Cup Season, not only showcasing his driving talent but also setting a unique record by competing in six different cars. With 10 race wins under his belt, he has dominated the season until a tough round 5 at Sydney, where Mik unfortunately suffered some engine issues bringing an end to his weekend. Despite this setback, Hazelton remains in the championship hunt, trailing leader Robert Scott by just 54 points heading into the final round at Morgan Park in Queensland.
What sets Hazelton’s season apart is his ambitious goal of becoming the first driver in Australia to win a championship while competing in six different cars, showcasing the parity of the RX8 Cup. He has piloted a variety of Maisie Place Motorsport RX8 Cup cars, each with their own personalities. He kicked off the season with the #81 car “Elvis” at Phillip Island, achieving a respectable P6 finish. At Winton, he took the #84 “Banana” to victory, setting a new lap record and bringing home his first round win of 2024. His momentum continued to round 3 Sydney, where he drove the #83 “Frankie,” securing pole position and winning three out of four races. Round 4 saw him pilot the #66 of RX8 Cup veteran Garry Lougher, where he swept the weekend with four wins, leading the championship by 41 points. However, his run of success was halted in Round 5 with the #82 “Dinico,” sadly encountering engine issues during the weekend.
The Maisie Pace Motorsport driver heads into the final round this time driving the #80 “Green Frogger,” regularly piloted by team owner Maisie Place. The stage is set for an exciting conclusion to the 2024 RX8 Cup season. Whether he clinches the championship or not, Hazelton’s achievement of competing in six different cars and aiming for the title is a remarkable story that will resonate in Australian motorsport history.
The final round of the 2024 RX8 Cup championship takes place this weekend November 8-10 at Morgan Park Raceway QLD. All spectators welcome!!
